Lubricant Pyrolysis During Sintering of Powder Metallurgy Compacts

چکیده
The chemistry surrounding the pyrolysis of N,NЈ-ethylenebisstearimide (EBS) compacted with iron powder is described for the first time. Heat treatment is carried out in a 5 vol pct hydrogen atmosphere (balance nitrogen) over the 100 °C to 850 °C range. The exhaust from the furnace is monitored by Fourier transform infrared and dispersive ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy; condensable materials are analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A wide range of analytes emitted from the preceding process were characterized. The aliphatic CH stretch in the 3000 to 2700 cm Ϫ1 range and the asymmet-ric CO stretch in gaseous CO 2 at 2350 cm Ϫ1 are excellent indicators of the extent of delubrication. A bimodal CO emission phase is observed in the temperature window between delubrication and sintering. Three major large molecule reaction products, along with five minor compounds, are identified by GC/MS. A preliminary reaction mechanism is inferred based on product analysis and known organic chemistry. It appears that hydrolysis of EBS competes with ␥-H abstraction yielding an N-vinyl amide and stearamide, which undergoes further reaction. Hydrolysis affords stearic acid, which decarboxylates to heptadecane, and 2-heptadecyl-4,5-dihydroimidazole via ring closure of the corresponding amino-amide.

Effect of Slow Cooling in Reducing Pore Size in a Sintered Powder Metallurgical 6061Aluminium Alloy
The usage of powder metallurgy aluminium compacts in lieu of ferrous components in automotives helps to lower vehicle weight. The major drawback in the commercially available press sintered aluminium alloy is porosity which is mainly dependent on the powder metallurgical process parameters such as compaction pressure, sintering temperature and cooling rate after sintering. In this paper the eff...

متن کاملOn the Effect of Feedstock Preparation on the Characteristics of Warm Formed Powder Compacts
Powder compaction technology has advanced significantly over the past decades and is considered as an alternative lower-cost process to machining, casting, stamping, forging and other similar metal-working technologies. Feedstock preparation is considered a vital step in producing parts through the powder route because any inhomogeneity within the powder mass would cause inhomogeneous density d...
متن کاملEffect of Sintering Temperature on Density, Porosity and Hardness of a Powder Metallurgy Component
The residual porosity is an unavoidable phenomenon of the components produced by powder metallurgy process which in turn largely affects the strength property of the same. Now a day it is possible to control porosity of powder metallurgy components and retain them to desired amount when required. The porosity of a powder metallurgy component is greatly depends on the sintering temperature. In t...

In this study; iron based powder metal (PM) bushing compacts were sintered via medium frequency induction heating system. Iron based powders were mixed with 2 wt.% copper (Cu), 0.3 wt.% carbon (C) and 1 wt.% zinc stearat (Zn-st) via V-Type mixer. PM compacts were sintered by 2 different sintering processes. One of them was conventional sintering method other was medium frequency induction sinte...
